The Adjutant's Desk is Back.

If  you are reading this post, you must have gotten the mailing sent out a few days ago letting the Post membership know that we will be using this blog platform to inform the members about upcoming events and Post 577 news.  We are using this method of communication because it is much more timely, as well as much less expensive.  Between postage and copying costs, it can cost up to $100 to send out a single mailing to all the Post's members, which numbers approximately 150 people. This is money that can be better spent taking care of more pressing expenses, such as utilities, and other Post operations.  It is my hope as Post Adjutant that all members of Post 577 will avail themselves of this method of delivering Post communications.  If you have any questions or concerns about the blog or any of the content on it, please contact the Post either by phone at 412-521-1399 or email at alpost577@gmail.com

As was explained in the mailing,  Our Post meetings are held the 2nd Sunday of each month except for July and August.  The meetings are held at 2pm at our Post Home at 5857 Forbes Ave in Squirrel Hill.  The Post entrance is located at the rear of Orr's Jewelry.  Minutes of Post meetings will be available for download from this blog a few days after the meeting.  For those interested in running for Post offices next year, it is important to attend as many meetings as possible in order to be informed about our activities.

A few years ago, in order to increase our Post's exposure in the community, we put a table out in front of Orr's and started to give out candy and snacks to children participating in Squirrel Hill's Halloween event on October 31 from 5:30-7:00 along Forbes Ave. Since our initial involvement, this activity has been very successful with many parents and children coming up to our table for candy, as well as information about the American Legion.  Many of these people also thanked out volunteers for their military service as well as their continued service in the Legion.  It is important for our Post to be visible and relevant in Squirrel Hill and participation in these events help.  We need donations of candy and/or other  snacks to give out to the children, as well as volunteers to give the items out.  If you are interested, please call the Post at 412-521-1399 or email us at alpost577@gmail.com

Legion College West happens on November 5th from 9:00am-3:00pm at Latrobe High School.  This all day event is designed to provide Legionnaires training in crucial aspects of the American Legion and its programs.  Classes available cover the roles of Post Adjutant's, Chaplains, Service Officers, general information about the American Legion and Home Associations. The cost of this event is $15, and the registration form can be downloaded here  For those members interested in running for the offices mentioned above, these courses provide a lot of the basic information needed to fulfill those offices.  Registration forms and payment must be in to the Department of PA by October 21.  For more information, call or email the Post.

Please make sure that you renew your Post membership as soon as possible.  For your convenience, you can renew your membership online here

As more events occur and more information about the Post becomes available, please return to the Adjuant's Desk often to keep up to date about what's going on in Post 577

Thank you,

Pierrre Wheaton, Post Adjutant
